We do groundbreaking work designing low-cost utility bicycles for developing countries, and leading trial markets to gauge the price levels, features that customers need. By providing plans, photos, reports, and accounts of our work, we are creating and enabling a worldwide community of bicycle designers and economic development to achieve greater results with their funds and time.
How much of an impact has Worldbike.org had so far?
Consider some of the achievements Worldbike.org has made in the past five years:
- Pioneered low-cost, long-wheelbase, load-carrying bicycles, reducing the cost of a load-carrying bicycle by as much as 60% over rickshaws, trailers, and tricycles.
- Led the Big Boda trial market in the Kisumu region of Western Kenya. Built and sold 50 bicycles.
- Two bicycles selected by the Cooper-Hewitt (Smithsonian National Design Museum) for “Design for the Other 90%,” which opened in May 2007.
- Recruited, trained and built a metalworking workshop in Kisumu now selling the Big Boda on an ongoing basis to local entrepreneurs and Kenyan NGO’s. Trained employees to use email, enabling direct low-cost project communication.
- Recognized in WIRED, Forbes, Dwell, and the Wall Street Journal, as a leader in low-cost bicycle design, and in appropriate technology movement.
- Licensed the Worldbike, our strongest and lightest cargo bicycle, to Tom Ritchey, one of the inventors of the mountain bike, for his work in Rwanda through Project Rwanda.
- Published plans of bicycle technologies (Longtail and Extrabike) in use in small development projects in Thailand, Senegal, and Mexico, among others.
- Educated and inspired countless people, including students and bike community members, by presenting Worldbike slideshows in the Bay Area.
As a knowledge and design organization, we do not have the resources to distribute millions of bicycles. We need to work in partnership with the bicycle industry to achieve the broadest possible impact. But before this can happen, the industry needs Worldbike to do the groundbreaking work of product design, trial markets, and outreach within the international development community. With the ongoing and increasing recognition of Worldbike as a key innovator and leader in bicycles and development, these partnerships will become easier to establish. This enables us to scale up our impacts and fulfill our mission: Bikes that Haul, For All.
It might be simpler for donors if we could summarize our impacts with a neat statistic like “every $75 donated to Worldbike buys a load-carrying bike for one family.” But in reality, the type of change we are trying to spark is not going to happen overnight, and it won’t happen in a linear fashion. Our work now, distributing dozens, or hundreds of bicycles in a project, is laying the groundwork for a major improvement in the bikes distributed in poor countries in the years to come. Donors who support Worldbike.org’s charitable mission must be comfortable with the nature of our work, and realize that our best days and deeds are ahead of us.
How does Worldbike.org make money?
Worldbike raises its budget by writing grants to foundations, and donations from individuals. Sales of Worldbke bicycles and revenues from consulting account for less than 10% of our budget. Early stage trial-markets of new bicycle technologiis in developing countries are always money-losing ventures, requiring donations to make up the shortfall. Please give generously!
How much money does Worldbike.org need to fulfill its mission?
Our current annual budget is under 100K. We would like to grow it to 500K by 2008. Your generous donations can help make this happen.
Worldbike is a 501c3 nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of California. Your donation to Worldbike is tax deductible.
