Can pathauto produce shorter URL's?

 I'd rather see:

worldbike.org/open-source than 

worldbike.org/what-open-source-bicycle-design 

Maybe it's better to turn it off and just have path be part of the writing/editing process? That's how I handle it at Rock the Bike. But then people have to know the site structure pretty well.
